Diese Übersicht beinhaltet den Titel, die Uhrzeit und kurze Beschreibungen des Inhalts, teils mit Bildern der Sendungen.
Beim digitalen Fernsehen werden die EPG-Daten in den DVB-SI Daten übertragen. Digitalreceiver verfügen in der Regel über einen eingebauten EPG-Decoder, der diese Daten anzeigt. Erweiterungen des EPG nach dem MHP-Standard können Bilder und zusätzliche Informationen anzeigen und auch einen digitalen Videorekorder oder HTPC programmieren.
VDR benutzt die vom Sender zur Verfügung gestellten EPG-Daten. Dazu scannt VDR permanent die EPG-Daten des aktuellen Kanals und speichert diese in einer eigenen Datenbank.
Bei Inaktivität des Benutzers stößt VDR nach einer einstellbaren Wartezeit den EPG-Scan an, dabei werden alle Kanäle der Reihe nach durchgeschaltet und deren EPG-Daten erfasst (siehe Benutzerhandbuch: "Zeit bis EPG Scan"). Bei Mehrkartensystemen wird der EPG-Scan im Hintergrund auf ungenutzten TV-Karten ausgeführt.
Zusatzprogramme können externe EPG-Daten in die VDR-Datenbank importieren und dadurch im VDR nutzbar machen.
Der automatische EPG-Scan von VDR mit nur einer DVB-Karte kann ebenfalls durch verschiedene Umstände verhindert werden. Einer ist das OSD-Teletext-Plugin.
