With plugin softieee1394 you may control firewire camcorder devices connected to your computer. If they get plugged in, you'll see a short messages with the name of the attached device. The main-menu entry for selecting a device is only visible if there is any device present. Depending of the medium inserted into your camera (with or without eeprom chip), you may select either the camera for operation or a specific tape location for playback.
